Abstract: Regarding the Second Zapatista participation in the Meeting of Resistances and Rebellions, day August 5th 2025.

Through a surprising glance into the past, to our ancestors, the Zapatista people reassess their present and the problems they confront. As a consequence of assisting to an Assembly of the Dead, the communities begin a profound analysis of the form of their autonomous government. The Dead have warned them against the oppressive pyramid. Because the day will come in which the living will have to answer to the dead.

With this in mind, they set themselves to criticize and self-criticize the shortcomings in the work of the Municipios Autónomos Rebeldes Zapatistas (MAREZ) and the Juntas de Buen Gobierno. Corruption, theft, embezzlements, incongruencies, bureaucracies and frankly some really fucked up shit by some authorities shifts, are denounced through communal assemblies. All in one go, one cannot believe it. The accusations are relentless, and proof is given. Punishments and sanctions are applied.

But the self-critical analysis does not stop there. One can tell that the model of autonomous government is replicating the pyramidal shape that the fucking system imposes on the parts of the whole.

As a wind that starts as a gentle breeze, increases its intensity, and becomes a hurricane, the sentence grows. Youngsters (jóvenas y jóvenes) with different mother languages, of Mayan roots, argue, change ideas, analysis, thoughts and proposals. The sentence is common: “Fuck the pyramid.” (“a la chingada el pirámide”).

In common and organized, the Zapatista people throw down their pyramid, disappear the MAREZ and the Juntas de Buen Gobierno. They thus commit their struggle to the crumbling down and destruction of all pyramids, especially of the mother pyramid: the capitalist mode of production. Facing a global criminal: resistance and rebellion in the parts of the whole, they declare. Gossip is confirmed: the pyramid is undressed with fire and demolished. On its debris, a bunch of people dance and sing. One has to be gaze and ear facing one’s peers in their differences, the parts of the whole that resist, reveal, and rebel against the system.

The Zapatista communities will continue to search for a form of communal relationship that is not pyramid-shaped… in common and organized.

But I think the present and the past are not enough. Maybe it is also necessary to look into the future…
