Listen…

Zapatista National Liberation Army
March 2025

To the artistic and intellectual community of Mexico and the world:

Listen… We know you’re busy with Trump, but—I don’t know if you’ve noticed—things are happening that would terrify even the most even-tempered. These aren’t isolated or extraordinary events; they’re frequent, every day, «common,» «normal.»

Here, we remember that you used to organize and participate in concerts, exhibitions, auctions, raffles, articles, and roundtable discussions to support Indigenous Peoples.

We don’t argue that we’re no longer in fashion, or that some of you found shelter and a salary in the 4T or its equivalents in your regions.

But there are noble, just, true causes, right here, in the house across the street, around the corner, an hour from the hustle and bustle of the city. A girl, a boy, a young woman, a young man, an adult, a woman—someone who’s already in their senses—disappears. But someone remembers them, someone misses them, someone needs them, someone is looking for them.

The search groups aren’t included in the budget (although they’re now trying to «buy» these people off by giving them government positions), and they don’t receive daily media attention, even though their work is daily and takes years, many, six-year terms. And it’s necessary for the crack of terror that defines this nation’s daily life like a real nightmare to open up so that they’re looked at again. Yes, it will only be for a few days… until a new scandal covers the current one.

Unless you believe the same as the Senate leader (who maintains that it could actually be a garage sale, or a business selling used shoes and clothing, and not the clothes of hundreds of murdered people), you must be moved by the testimonies, the images, the screams, the vigils, the clumsy statements of the authorities, their lack of empathy, their assumption that this country is already shielded from horror, death, and cynicism.

This cause, that of searching for and finding the disappeared, is not a partisan cause. What’s more, these groups have worked hard to keep out the coyotes and vultures of the political parties and acronyms that accompany them.

It’s something human, or it should be. So, why not a campaign where the arts and thought are present in the face of this horror, yes, but also in the face of the nobility and dignity of those who seek truth and justice?

Okay, we know you have your vacations, tours, engagements, birthdays, and weddings planned, the weather, that’s too cold, or too hot, or too rainy; but one day, just one day, in which the arts and thought manifest themselves and let these searching people know that, at least, they have found humanity in those of us who have this geography, Mexico, as a space of pain, shame… and struggle.

These people, men and women, are not looking for money (something Mr. Beltrones will never understand), nor for a position (although there are plenty of vultures around him), something the 4T doesn’t understand.

They are looking for their loved ones, for those they miss.

And whether they find them or not, they should have the satisfaction of having made ALL OF US see that those who are absent are also our absent ones.

Each one with their own individuality, in their own geography, with their own way, with their knowledge, imagination, and creativity. A day to embrace those who search tirelessly. A little light for those who seek to break the night of oblivion. One day, at least, to remind them and remind us that shame, empathy, anger, and dignity are also human.

So, brothers and sisters of the Arts and Thought, if you remain silent now, nothing and no one will be able to find you.

From the mountains of the Mexican Southeast.
In the name of the Zapatista girls, boys, women, others, men, and elders.

Subcommander Insurgent Moisés.
Mexico, March 2025.
