Let’s let Insurgent Commander Marcos have a word:

Good afternoon,

Comrades and partners,

My name is Marcos, Sub commander Marcos of the Zapatista National Liberation Army. We bring special greetings for the women of the Independent Pancho Villa Popular Front (FPFVI). There were times, days, when this city was lit up by its demonstrations, not only with you, as the Independent Pancho Villa Popular Front but all that was that flash of dignity and rebellion that the urban popular movement was and with it, the student’s struggle, not only in ’68 and not only in ’99, and with it the labor-workers fight. From over there, our mountains, in misery and with the pain of our dead we looked forward with hope to the day when we could find you and call you comrade – partner. For a long time, we were there preparing, what would be Jan 1 of ’94. During 10 years in silence and the mountains we were learning how to listen and talk with the people at the bottom with humble sincere people who would later be our support bases.

A child just sent a letter with a question, that asked if the Zapatistas Indigenous people lived badly because of the Zapatista National Liberation Army. Poor people in the cities, like poor people in any part of the nation, like all the Indian nations of this continent, we live poor, and we’re bad off because of the rich people that exploit us, kick us off our lands and humiliate us. We came to the conclusion that we had to say “that’s enough !” to this situation and that’s how we rose up in arms. Thanks to your lessons, as a popular movement we knew that we couldn’t just stay there. We had to worry about our own people, their well being, and advances for them. It couldn’t be ‘our’ movement like others, just so that some get names for themselves, or so that a leader or various, get into power, get rich, and betray the cause. This lesson we learned from you as the Independent Pancho Villa Popular front, like IDP, like MAIZ, like EN LUCHA like the university students, like the CGH, like all the organizations that now are attending this event. We want to thank the comrades-partners from the Association of Charros that are our hosts at this occasion. Thanks comrades-partners.

What we learned from you, to worry about our own people made us, so that for these last 12 years we’ve been putting in a special effort so that our communities, the Indigenous Zapatista communities could have schools, hospitals, land to work and a good diet. So that the help we received from various parts of the world and various parts of Mexico was concentrated fundamentally and exclusively in the development of our communities. Now, like you, we can say that we have houses, we have schools, we have hospitals, and above all we have lands to work, because with arms in our hands we took them from the big landowners.

Since then our lives have bettered and we can say it’s better than any of the Indigenous communities that receive aid from the bad government. The PRI communities are those that are at the bottom of this country and even so, with the advances we’ve had, we had to look outwards and wait. Somehow or the other, together with other organizations, at a distance we thought that we had to find out who it was that was responsible for the abandonment we had recieved from the main political parties in government: the PRI, the PAN, and the PRD, and for the treason that came together in 2001 with the ‘Indigenous Counter-Reform’.

During those 4 or 5 years we were preparing this, where we are now; this calling, this place, this voice where we’re not only the Zapatistas but together with us in this that we call the Other campaign., other organizations.

As a historical vocation, or for destiny, we had to look for the symbol of the Northern ‘Centaur’ of Franciso Villa. We had seen desperately and with disillusion how some had taken that name and then they changed Long Live Villa for Long Live Carranza and Long Live Obregon; those that gave into the seduction of power and exchanged a noble just cause for a government position. Their discourse didn’t change, but their practices did, and their position did, instead of being at the bottom in the left with their own people, they started to take a seat with the owners of all that; with the owners, or powerful, with the big politicians. And this system started to operate in them.; what we know. It converted them, transformed them, precisely into what they had risen up against.

We waited, it’s our specialty, to wait and we discovered that there were men and women left over, that hadn’t sold out, and hadn’t given up. Those, like Villa, who had suffered jail, but returned to fight. Those who had received persecution but had maintained firm in the struggle, those that had the chance to betray the movement and they didn’t do it, those that had the chance to sell out and they didn’t do it, those that could have fooled themselves, that they could get from up above what is only gotten from below.

The leaders of the Independent Pancho Villa Popular Front. We looked for them, we looked for each other, we met in the mountains of southwest Mexico. We felt that it was the historical vocation of those who revindicated the figure of Francisco Villa, and them that humbly try to do honour, to the figure of Emilio Zapata. Now, up above, they’re worried, once again Villa and Zapata have sat down together and they have spoken. Once again they’ve agreed and now together with others, with other organizations, with other groups and collectives, individuals, and families they’ve agreed to march against the power and attack it.

There, above, they’re desperate, their electoral campaigns don’t stick. The people don’t believe them. Every time they’re more immersed in the polls because they know that the elections of July 2nd are going to be a disaster. And despite the silence they want us to understand, with the obscurity, about the Other Campaign, they see desperately that more and more people…more men, more women, more children, more seniors, but above all more struggles are coming to agreement in this great movement at a national level. It’s that desperation which impedes them from seeing what their destiny is.

Women comrades, principally you know how there’s still many things left on the agenda in our lives, the high prices of the products we consume, the lack of education, the lack of health care, the lack of public services. Gentlemen comrades: low wages, humiliation, police mistreatment and abuse from police and public functionaries. We can see that we’ve built many advances. You and us, you in your organization and us in ours, and the moment has come to see if we can reach and agreement which implies a respect for the autonomy and independence of each organization, not only with the Independent Pancho Villa Popular Front, with the UNOPI and the EZLN, but within this space, this area that’s so big as the OTHER Campaign where other organizations, other collectives, and other groups merge. The question is whether we’re going to build an agreement above or if we’re going to build it below?, like everything that the OTHER campaign is about, in the struggle, in the common demands and with the help that as brothers and sisters in the struggle, with the same enemy, we owe to each other. And we want to tell you, it’s an honour, an honour if it isn’t the greatest one we’ve had to have as comrades and partners now in the Other Campaign people like you. Men and women like you because for them, those above don’t see us. They criticize they put us to one side; noone as much as you can testify to what point they’re smeared like you can, by the mass media. Whatever mobilization you do, you’re painted out to be provocateurs, revolters, a minority. The way they attacked you is how they attacked the comrades-partners students in the CGH in the strike of 99-2000. And the same way they attacked us, every time we rose up. Like that against any group that organizes rises up and struggles for what it deserves. And on top of the smear campaign, to suffer the disappearance of our comrade partners, suffer murder, like the comrade partners in Coahuila and in Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan. Suffer apprehension orders, persecution, blows from those above, always with anguish and fear that can only be cured in a collective, struggling together.

For us, you have been a great lesson, not just as a great organization but also as a leadership group. Hopefully, hopefully one day, this first relationship that we’re having, this first agreement in the Other Campaign can advance towards a stronger and solider unit.

Now, up above with the terror that they’re experiencing, that they can’t convince the people at the bottom, that problems are resolved from up above, with the terror of seeing that some other thing is rising up, this Other Campaign, and that it’s really responding to it’s proposal-plan, to listen, to offer respect, to offer a place for all those that want to struggle; the fear and anguish that we have now starts to change places. It’s them, those up above that start to feel afraid, like the Carranzistas felt when Villa and Zapata met, like the neo-Porforistas that had gotten into power too. Now the powerful are starting to shake with this unity that’s starting to grow, and their worry isn’t only because Villa and Zapata meet but that along with them, they start to find other forces, other organizations, other struggles. The worst nightmare for the powerful; the student, the worker, the farmer, the Indigenous person, the employee, the neighbor, unite in one single fight and together we realize who is our common enemy, and we go to get what they owe us.

Some out there, up above want to console themselves that it’s possible to have a delayed change. They talk about neoliberalism to hide that they’re not against capitalism. You can’t take on one without taking on the other. Neoliberalism is only one stage of capitalism and capitalism is unreformable. It’s not possible to humanize it. It’s not possible to slow down it’s greed and avarice. It’s not possible to make it so that it’s not so bad, so cruel the way it is. It’s necessary to totally destroy it in its roots.

The Sixth Declaration and the Other campaign have defined clearly the enemy, and they have convoked the Sixth Declaration the Other Campaign, all the forces that recognize this enemy and recognize that to overthrow it, we need to destroy it. It’s not the first time we say it but we repeat again, our proposal in the Other Campaign is to overthrow the supreme government; to finish with the corrupt politicians with those that carry the responsibility for our misery and humiliation but we don’t stop there, to go beyond and kick out the rich people from this country, and return to construct together at the bottom to the left, another country and a new agreement, a new constitution. We’ve round people like you in all parts, organizations that have leaders that don’t sell out or give up. Organizations that struggle in their place, and nobody sees except the Otra Campaña, that no one is listening to them except the Otra Campaña, that no one offers a hand and help and unity more than the Other Campaign. While up above, literally, amongst their polls and their bull, down here the best this country has is starting to rise up. While up above they’re fighting to see which is the least of the worst. While the Other Campaña is getting together the best. The best men and women, without regard to their age, if they’re seniors, if they’re youth, if they’re adults, or if they’re children. And it’s this unity that’s going to rise up once again and it’s going to make this country shake, and it’s going to make them fall, those that are up above. And we’re going to be able to cultivate the land with dignity, without fear, and have a dignified house, and we’ll have good schools and hospitals and wages, and peace, which is what we need.

From up above partners and comrades we’re not gong to get anything but chicanery insults and exploitation. And here at the bottom is the nobility that has grown not only in the Independent Pancho Villa Popular Front, not only in the UNOPI, but in all the organizations that haven’t let themselves get blinded by the light of the powerful with their money.

It results now, that in the Other Campaign, that there weren’t few us, that we weren’t alone, it turns out that we recognize one same enemy, and it resulted that we have to answer the fundamental question, not against who?, but when, where, at what time? And if we can build this unity, at a national level, based on respect not in cheating, not in imposing hegemonies and banners, but by respecting what each one of us is and respecting the struggle that each one of us has or is in, but recognizing the same enemy, so then we’ll be able to raise this movement up at a national level. Is what we’ve seen in most of the nation, comrades-partners is a history of indescribable pain. The same thing that happened 70 years ago, that happened 100 years ago, that happened 200, 500 years ago, continue growing in the Indigenous communities and now they start to invade the country, the non-Indigenous farmers. We know too that the labor sector is very beaten, that the public educational institutions are being privatized, employees are being over exploited, that small businessmen are disappearing, that vendors are being chased as if they were criminals, that the youth is treated like murderers, like delinquents. We knew that women are criticized and hunted only because they’re women. We know all this that we didn’t know, while up above they’re still telling us the same old story that it’s possible that someone, or some, will rescue us from the misery we’re in.

You know what it cost to build up this movement, the same or more as to build up a house, in an inhospitable place, without electricity, without water and then to even be “kicked out” by the police, to even still, see your leaders in jail, to see your organization smeared in the mass media, as if the thieves weren’t those that are Deputies of Congress, Senators, even the Legislative Assembly of Mexico City, or the Federal Assembly. Those: the delegation leaders, the governers, the government leaders, the presidents of the republic, those are the real delinquents and criminals, and those who go to jail, those that are hunted down, those that suffer extortion, are us, those below. Why are we going to keep taking this ? Why are we going to think that now for real things are going to change; if all the political parties have been in power and things are the same. The only one that hasn’t been in power is the people, organized, and that’s what this is all about. It’s not a bout a political party, it’s not about getting Marcos, or anybody, into power. It’s about organizing ourselves amongst ourselves, to unite our struggles to make them big as one, and without losing identity, without losing autonomy, and independence, finish with the enemy, once and for all for everybody. With the capitalist system, finish with the big landowners, the landlords, those that have shopping centers, those that have banks, the industrialists, finish with all those rich and also with the politicians that are at their service. This, partners + comrades, is the Other Campaign. It’s not looking for the power it’s not looking for the least of the worse, it’s looking for the best, and looks to lift this country, once and for all, to conquer our destiny. If we don’t do it, if we don’t do it there won’t be anything to fight for tomorrow. There won’t be a country, there won’t be land, there won’t be shelter. This, what we now call a country, will be a mountain of rubble with a sign on it that says “for sale”. And us, we are going to have to go find another place, if we still want to live; or we’ll die, together with this land. We say that we have to change the fear, that it’s them that have fear, that it’s them that dine anguish; that it’s them, those at the top, that have nightmares at night, because their time; and it’s a promise , has arrived.

Thank you,

Comrades and Partners

FPFVI spokesperson: confronting hits to our freedom, or lives, without keeping a complicit silence, but neither did we forget that even still in all of society that exists within parliamental politics, and political parties, there are some that are worse than others, and it’s those worse that have used the dead to negotiate positions. Those that have been in charge of making strategies to destroy social movements; to approve, in other periods, neoliberal politics that increase even more Mexico’s misery. We don’t forget. We can’t forget, who the traitors, the murderers, the same repressors as always. In 1994, we saw with the rest of the country, and the entire world the Zapatista uprising in the state of Chiapas. We saluted the rebellion and all the hope that this movement, including the possibility for a great social movement. The discussion within our organization was intense. As a result of it, we decided to get on that boat that had utopia as it’s destination. We decided to go to the streets and add our voices so that our demands for peace, justice, freedom, democracy, independence, housing, food, education, health, and work, that traveled southeast Mexico but weren’t more than an echo of a shout coming from the entire country, because the “that’s enough !” of January 1st of ’94 was ancestral of this country called Mexico. With this conviction we formed part of what was this new version of the tower of babylon which was the National Democratic Convention. The following years had meetings and missed meetings, distancing and definitions, and of national movement. This process however let us get closer to those who for their struggle, consistency we recognize as sisters and brothers and with who we conform as
a national unit of organizations from the left and independent…It’s to say a force based in a struggle for those who have the least. A project of construction of popular common power as a daily task. Built, as well on honesty, dignity, and independence…

Translators-director’s note: there were many great speakers at the event with some really important things to say. Unfortunately I didn’t record them because I wasn’t properly prepared for the event. I’m still struggling to get stronger so as to cover this type of event properly. If you get the chance to check these “other” organizations messages out in detail, I recommend it.

FPFVI spokesperson: …all the oppressed classes of all times. To finish with this damning crime, there’s only one menu comrades-partners, to unite the…

De izquierda. Somos de izquierda.

Somos de izquierda porque somos de izquierda, sí, de izquierda, y que nadie lo dude. De izquierda real. No pantomima. No engaño, no mentira.
